NSS Volunteers Visit Pachathuruth at Central Prison
As part of the World Environment Day observance, NSS Unit 48 of WIRAS organized a visit to Pachathuruth (Green Place) at the Central Prison and Correctional Home, Kannur, on 5 June 2026. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. K. Venu, Superintendent of the Central Prison and Correctional Home.
Volunteer Secretary Suhan Haneef T delivered the welcome address, while Ajna Parveen U. K. P presided over the function. Sana Shamsudeen proposed the vote of thanks.
The volunteers were introduced to the prison's environmental conservation initiatives by Deputy Prison Officer Baiju K. K. and Assistant Prison officer Bijith. They explored the Tree Museum, which houses a variety of indigenous plant species, and the jasmine garden maintained by the inmates. The volunteers also learned that the prison was recognized as India's first jail to achieve carbon-neutral status and was awarded the distinction of being the country's best institution in this category. The visit provided valuable insights into sustainable environmental practices and responsible citizenship.
