Department of English Hosts Seminar on Postcolonial Perspectives of Shakespeare
The Department of English, WIRAS, organized an engaging seminar titled “Decolonizing the Bard: A Postcolonial Reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s Canon” on September 22, 2025, at the B. R. Ambedkar Seminar Hall. The event provided a critical platform for re-examining Shakespeare’s works through a postcolonial lens, drawing enthusiastic participation from faculty and students alike.
The inaugural session commenced with a warm welcome address by Ms. Faheema, Assistant Professor of English. This was followed by the presidential address delivered by Ms. Nivedya Das, Head of the Department of English. The seminar was formally inaugurated by Dr. Vineeth Kumar, Research Director and IQAC Coordinator, who emphasized the importance of revisiting classical texts from contemporary critical perspectives.
The keynote reflections were shared by the resource person, Mrs. Reshma Balan K., NVT Senior English, GVHSS Edayannur, who offered a thought-provoking preview of the session to follow. Ms. Fathima, Joint Secretary, concluded the inaugural session with a heartfelt vote of thanks.
The core session featured an in-depth analysis by Mrs. Reshma Balan K., who delivered an insightful lecture examining Othello and The Tempest through postcolonial frameworks. Her interpretations shed light on the complexities of identity, race, and colonial power structures embedded in the texts. The session also included student feedback, adding further depth to the academic discourse.
The seminar concluded with a token of appreciation presented to the resource person by Dr. Vineeth Kumar. The memento was given in recognition of her valuable contribution to the event.
